Located near the picturesque sea side town of Kilalla, Co. Mayo, David and Micheál Smyth along with their sister Aoife Maloney are the second generation family operators of Mullafarry Quarry which started production in 1960.

During that time the company has become one of the leading suppliers of road chippings, tarmacadam, ahsphalt and readymix concrete to the construction and road finishing sectors in Ireland and beyond.

The company is looking towards the future purpose of the quarry, recently acquiring a waste licence for its rehabilitation as a processor of non-hazardous construction waste.  With this in mind and an increased demand for their products, the business was looking for a machine that could accommodate both their current and future needs.

The company have a long established relationship with Finlay and presently have a J1175 Jaw Crusher, a 683 screener, 693 and 694 on site. Based on the reliability and dependability they experienced operating with these machines, purchasing another Finlay product was a natural choice for Mullafarry who recently took possession of a Finlay 883+ from Ormonde Machinery.

The high performance Terex Finlay 883+ was particularly suited to the site, which required a machine to address a number of applications. Once more the versatility of the 883+ was a key decision factor for the family run business who required a machine which could clean contaminated blast material from the quarry face, a screener to separate out the quality blast material and a machine that can screen after the material had passed through the J-1175 crusher.

David Smyth investigated the technical specifications on a number of machines but felt that the “The hardox plate apron feeder feature of the 883+ allows the machine to be used for all our required applications. This was a key consideration for us when deciding how to best use our capital equipment investment”

As with all business on going costs were another concern and for Micheál Smyth the capacity to process at a rate of up to 600 tonnes per hour was attractive “Due to the high production output, our experience has been that it results in an efficient cost per tonne fuel ratio.”

The machine which is currently handling high volumes has huge flexibility in delivering various sized materials simply by adjusting the top deck.

“It is working well on site but if we require quick technical support or after sales service, our experience of dealing with Ormonde machinery has been extremely positive”
